Caste is often described as “division of labour" dating back to antiquity, though its hereditary basis still results in much inequity. Yet, evidence of caste as a factor in commercial affairs is too strong to dismiss and its implications remain relevant. Consider the findings of a recent study on the persistence of caste in the corporate sector. That a policy of caste diversity is always better for profits, however, cannot quite be inferred from this. What’s woefully underexplored by economists is what the prevalence of caste implies to the Indian economy.
